In recent years, technology has increasingly entered various areas of life, including health and physical activity. One of the most promising and at the same time controversial trends in recent seasons are immersive training using virtual reality (VR). Is this the future of fitness or a passing technological curiosity? Let's take a closer look.

What are VR immersive training?

VR immersive training is a form of physical activity conducted in a completely virtual world, which the user enters using VR goggles and often additional motion controllers. Instead of exercising in a traditional fitness studio, we can, for example, climb virtual rocks, fight monsters with a lightsaber or dance on a futuristic dance floor.

How does it work technically?

To use VR training you need:

  • VR goggles (e.g. Meta Quest, HTC Vive, PlayStation VR),
  • motion controllers or sensors tracking the position of hands and body,
  • Appropriate VR software/training application, e.g. Supernatural, FitXR, Holofit, VZfit,
  • free physical space to perform movements safely.

The VR system tracks body movements and translates them into actions in the virtual world. Training apps offer scenarios such as:

  • interactive cardio games,
  • training HIIT,
  • boks,
  • dance,
  • yoga and meditation,
  • bicycle or running trips along exotic routes.

Advantages of immersive training

1. Greater motivation

VR training engages on an emotional and cognitive level. The addictive gameplay makes the user forget that he or she is training, which helps overcome the boredom and monotony of classic training.

2. Training for every level of advancement –

Virtual training is scalable and adaptive. Users can adjust the intensity, pace and type of activity to their fitness level.

3. Location accessibility

You can train anywhere, e.g. in your living room or hotel room. VR eliminates the need to travel to the gym or group classes.

4. Great cardio form

Many VR applications effectively raise your heart rate and burn calories at a level comparable to running or interval training.

5. Gamification element

Collecting points, competing with others, progress and rewards motivate you to be regular.

Disadvantages and limitations

1. Equipment costs

A good VR set can cost from several hundred to several thousand zlotys. This is a barrier to entry for many people.

2. Limited activation of some muscle groups -

Although VR workouts are good for cardio, they are more difficult to effectively train strength and muscle mass.

3. The need for space and safety

In tight spaces, it is easy to hit furniture or fall over. You should prepare the environment well.

4. Health issues

Some users may experience nausea, dizziness, or visual discomfort during longer VR sessions.

5. Lack of contact with reality

VR training is a closed world, devoid of real air, sunlight or relationships with other participants.

For whom do VR training make the most sense?

  • For people who have trouble motivating themselves to exercise regularly.
  • For introverts and those who don't like the gym.
  • For fans of games and new technologies.
  • For people working remotely and looking for home activities.

Does this make sense?

Yes, provided you approach it consciously. Immersive VR training can be a great complement to classic forms of activity. They will not replace strength training at the gym or running in the field, but they can be an inspiring way to move every day and improve your fitness.

The future of immersive training

As technology develops, we can expect increasingly realistic experiences: haptic touch sensations, better tracking of whole body movement and integration with health sensors. AI-powered virtual trainers could in the future conduct personalized sessions like real instructors.

VR training is not for everyone, but it is undoubtedly one of the most interesting directions in the development of modern fitness.
